inCMS can scale images in the image module to fit the intended layout area and take a selected crop into account. However, images should still be prepared for their intended use before uploading.
Prepare the image before uploading
Choose a suitable crop and upload the image large enough for the largest intended display area. Do not reduce it too much, because a small original cannot provide additional image quality when it needs to be enlarged.
There is no universally applicable pixel or file-size value. The intended image area, the desired crop and the quality of the source image are what matter. Whenever possible, crop the image to the required area before uploading. Further edits such as rotation, brightness, contrast or colours are also best made before uploading.
JPG or PNG?
JPG is generally the best choice for normal photographs. Use PNG when transparency is required, for example for logos or cut-out graphics. PNG files are often much larger for photographs and can increase loading time.
Reduce file size
If you want to reduce file size further, you can optimise the image with a suitable tool before uploading. Always keep the original file. Strong compression can visibly reduce image quality.
Edit an image in inCMS
Click the pencil icon to edit an inserted image. You can crop the image there. The small arrow next to Quality contains the Insert image unchanged setting. This turns off automatic image processing for that image. Use it only when the original should deliberately remain unchanged.
Note: These instructions apply to the image module. Background images, galleries, images in text content and individually customised templates can behave differently.
For more extensive image editing, you can use any image-editing software you prefer. Pixlr is one online tool, for example.
